You always had a servant or joined up with others traveling the same way. While being robbed or killed were issues nobles also had to worry about being kidnapped and held for ransom. Ransoms were big business!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, about armor. It doesn't have to be full plate. There are a lot of styles of armor such as the Wisby coat of plates which is easier to make and wear. (After the Battle of Wisby (Visby) they buried the dead with their armor, an ususal find of real stuff.) They still would likely need someone to help finish with the buckles. My husband wears this style for SCA combat and the last two buckles are in the back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's another thing about the practicle side of armor. You don't always have to wear all of it. If the chances of being in battle are low leaving off a breast plate (especially if there is chain or a heavy jupon underneath) can make you a bit more comfortable. I watched a whole bunch of guys sleep in their armor while waiting for delayed battle at a big SCA event. (They had been up late the night before to attend an all night vigil for a new knight.) Again, this wasn't the full plate you're imagining but a wide variety of styles from no torso protection to a padded jacket or chain, to a coat of plates.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is a surviving jupon that was apparently designed just like the padded ones used for fighting but wasn't used as such. The owner was sainted or something so it is still in a church. It is made of a fancy red and gold silk weave and would have been worn at court.
